The High Desert Hustlers final gymkhana got off to a rough start. Gary Carroll came off his horse and was out for a few minutes (even with his helmet). He went to the hospital for a quick check and returned to complete the show. Way to go, Gary. A few minutes later, Julie MacDonald was launched off of her horse who spooked at the barrel in Speed Barrels. She landed on her head and shoulder, and remained conscious. Her helmet was cracked in five places, but she had no head or neck injuries. She will be in a shoulder immobilizing cast for awhile, and is learning to deal with 1 left arm until her shoulder heals. Creates some challenges, but she should be fine. Two very good examples of why we wear helmets. PLEASE wear a properly fitted helmet every time you are on your horse, regardless of what others may think. Both of these riders could be in a coma or paralyzed had they not worn their helmet!
